Greek islands - September 2019
During the last weeks, the humanitarian situation on the Greek islands has deteriorated as a result of a significant increase in arrivals. There are currently 24,000 people on five islands, a number we have not seen since 2016 and that represent three times the capacity of the reception centres. Of these people, 60 percent are women and children.
This week the Greek government has transferred 1,416 people from Lesbos to the mainland, but still 2,500 people already recognised as vulnerable remain trapped on the island without access to adequate healthcare.
MSF is battling to respond to the urgent medical and mental needs of men, women and children.
