Plague in Madagascar
Tamatave (also known as Toamasina) is a 300.000 people city on the eastern coast of Madagascar. Plague is not endemic there. There have been 147 cases there leading to 9 deaths (all pneumonic form because plague is not endemic in this area, meaning there are no animal vector present) are as of October 18th there were 112 plague patients hospitalized. MSF teams provide ground intervention in Tamatave in support to MoH, including: case management of patients in the plague triage and treatment center (CTTP), support to the triage system to identify and isolete patients to reduce the risk of infection within the health structure, training of health professionals, investment on hygiene/desinfection protocols in the hospital and the community for epidemic control, and health promotion in the community to sensitize people on how to protect themselves.
